International & Foreign National Military Spouses

Guidance on immigration, work authorization, and settling in as a foreign national spouse of a US service member.

1. Green Card & Immigration

Military spouses who are foreign nationals typically enter the US on a CR-1 or IR-1 visa. Upon arrival, apply for Adjustment of Status (I-485) or use your existing conditional/permanent residence. USCIS field offices handle military cases with priority processing. Carry your green card, passport, and marriage certificate at all times.

2. Work Authorization (EAD)

To work in the US, foreign national spouses need an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) unless they already have permanent residence. Apply via Form I-765. Processing takes 3–6 months. Do NOT start working before receiving your EAD. Military spouse EAD applications can be expedited — request expedite through USCIS citing military orders.

3. Social Security

Apply at your local SSA office with: passport, I-94 arrival record, EAD or green card, and marriage certificate. Processing takes 2–4 weeks. You need an SSN to work, open bank accounts, and file taxes.

4. Driver's License

Requirements vary by state. Most states accept foreign national spouses with valid immigration status. Bring: passport, I-94, EAD/green card, proof of residence, and SSN. Some states (like NC) require additional documentation for non-citizens.

5. ESL & Language Resources

Army Community Service (ACS), Airman & Family Readiness Center (AFRC), and Fleet & Family Support Center (FFSC) all offer free ESL classes. Local community colleges often have affordable ESL programs. Military OneSource provides free language learning tools. Ask your installation's International Spouse Group.

6. Cultural Adjustment

Culture shock is real and normal. Military OneSource offers free non-medical counseling for dependents (12 sessions). Many installations have International Spouse Coffee groups. Your FRG/Key Spouse/Ombudsman can connect you. Don't isolate — reach out.

7. Path to Citizenship

Military spouses are eligible for expedited naturalization. After 3 years of marriage to a US citizen (with the citizen being in the military), you can apply for citizenship. The filing fee may be waived. Contact your installation Legal Assistance Office.
